Auxillary storage on AS/400 continues to increse. At the first announcement the popular low end model B20
had a maximum of 4.80 G disks! However the need of storage seems to grow even faster. On many systems it is an
inadmissible luxery to save historic versions of program source.
Here I give you a good argument to start dooing so anyway: Cut two third of the size of your existing source files
with my PACKSRC. It's free!
The 'Pack source member(s)' command recuces the number of records in Source Physical File members to typical 10 - 50 % of its original. Use UNPACKSRC to restore the source to its original. The packed member is useless on its own. It can be saved and transmitted with less use of resources (because of it's smaller size), but it can not be read by any compiler or SEU. It is however easy to create an PDM option to unpack it. UNPACKSRC does not retain the original source change date but all content of the file (including line number and line change date) are retained after unpacking.
The command has been published previously in a version limited to 92 byte source files.
